FC Groningen’s Leandro Bacuna appears to be a man on a mission to start the Eredivisie this season. The newly promoted sides captain grabbed a goal in the opening weekend win over NAC Breda and followed that up with two assists against RKC Waalwijk this past weekend. Groningen enjoyed another three points thanks to their 2-1 win over their opponents. Once again, their captain led the way.
The 32-year-old Curacao international, formerly of English sides Aston Villa, Reading FC and Cardiff City, grabbed the assists for both goals. The first after just 10 minutes set up teenager Jorg Schreuders, whose first time shot from the edge of the box was far too good for Jeroen Houwen. This was Schreuders second goal of the season already. Bacuna’s second assist came just before the 80th minute. The right-back showed fantastic pace on the wing to take on Dario van den Buijs before pulling the ball back for Thom van Bergen to fire home.
Richard van der Venne’s late goal for the hosts was not enough as Groningen held on for another win thanks to their captain.
