Former Chelsea midfielder Gus Poyet has explained why Cole Palmer has to leave Chelsea in some quotes picked up this week.

Palmer is Chelsea’s talisman, he is there most important player without any doubt at all. When he is not playing, Chelsea are not as good. And at the moment, he is not playing because he has been struggling with a reoccurring groin issue.

EXCLUSIVE! Chelsea make contact to sign international centre back in the January window!!

Chelsea need him back. He is the one who makes them tick, the one who creates, scores, and is the biggest attacking threat for the team. So when you see that a former Chelsea player is saying he has to leave the club, you might wonder what on earth they are on about.

Well, Poyet believes that if Palmer wants to win the Ballon d’Or then he may well have to leave Chelsea, leave England, and join one of the European giants to be able to do so.

When asked whether Palmer will need to join a club like Real Madrid to win the Ballon d’Or, ex-Blues star Poyet told GOAL: “100 per cent, no doubt. For me, [Jude] Bellingham when I saw him at Dortmund, I liked him a lot. Then his first season at Real Madrid, I love him. Why? Because he was at Real Madrid doing what he was doing, simple. And I thought, maybe he is the Ballon d’Or. It was a big opportunity because he was amazing his first season in Spain – he was tremendous, another dimension, another level, and that helps.

“Would Lamine Yamal win the Ballon d’Or if he was playing at another team, Liverpool? No chance. I would say that I don’t like the Ballon d’Or nominations and I don’t like the vote, I think they are not fair. The people in Spain vote for the ones that play in La Liga, the people in England vote for those in England. The countries that don’t have anyone nominated, such as Uruguay, maybe they vote for the real one, the one that you think is the best. I don’t think it’s right, but it’s a great party for the players and it’s great to have one of them.”
