Peru have named former Brazil head coach Mano Menezes as their new manager after missing out on qualification for 2026 World Cup.

New coach for Peru after World Cup failure

The Peruvian Football Federation confirmed late on Thursday the appointment of Mano Menezes as the new head coach of the national team.

The 63 year old replaces Oscar Ibanez who was dismissed after Peru failed to qualify for FIFA World Cup 2026 which will be held in the United States, Mexico and Canada.

Menezes admitted that the national team has struggled in recent years but said he believes Peru can return to stronger position in South American football.

Menezes promises a fresh start

Speaking after his appointment, Menezes said the recent period has not delivered the results Peru expected.

However he stressed that his staff are ready to help the team get back on track and compete again with the continent’s leading nations.

Peru have now missed two of the last three World Cup failing to reach Qatar 2022 after previously qualifying for Russia 2018, their first appearance in the tournament for several decades.

Coaching experience in Brazil and abroad

Menezes arrives with a long coaching career across major clubs.

His most recent job was with Gremio where he spent eight month and guided the team to ninth place in the Brazilian league earning qualification for this year’s Copa Sudamericana.

He also managed the Brazil national team between 2010 & 2012.

During that period Brazil dropped to 14th in the FIFA world rankings, the lowest position in the country’s history.

Beyond the national team, Menezes coached several top Brazilian sides including Fluminense, Corinthians, Flamengo, Cruzeiro and Palmeiras.

He has also worked outside Brazil, with Shandong Luneng in China and Al Nassr in Saudi Arabia adding international experience to his profile.
