Former Celtic star Matt O’Riley’s Brighton future unclear | OneFootball

Former Celtic midfielder Matt O’Riley is expected to return to Brighton training this week as speculation continues to surround his future on the south coast.

The Denmark international missed Saturday’s pre-season victory over Roma through illness, having recently been linked with a move to the Serie A side as well as Atalanta.

Brighton boss Fabian Hurzeler has now revealed O’Riley has been working his way back to full fitness, while admitting discussions over the 25-year-old’s future are still to take place.

Hurzeler said via Daily Record: “He (O’Riley) had an illness during the last weeks.

“Therefore, he lost some weight, some energy. And now we try to give him this by training outside, by good nutrition and then I think he will start training next week again.

“I think these players, they are great for the locker room. They have a great character side.

“They will always give everything for this badge and I think that’s very important to understand.

“And then we need to figure it out, be very transparent, be very honest to each other and then try to find the right solutions.

“But like I said, these kind of players, I like to have in the locker room.”

O’Riley left Celtic for Brighton in a club-record £25million deal in the summer of 2024.
