Turkish Süper Lig side Beşiktaş have appointed Burak Yılmaz as their new head coach. The former Lille, Galatasaray and Turkey international striker has been promoted from assistant manager to head coach until further notice, the club have confirmed. The 38-year-old has temporarily been handed full duties following the sacking of Şenol Güneş.
Burak Yılmaz spent last season playing in the Eredivisie for Fortuna Sittard. The 77-time Turkey international scored nine goals and provided four assists in 26 appearances. Fortuna finished the 22/23 season in 13th place.
Yılmaz initially looked set to take his first steps as a coach at Fortuna Sittard, but things turned out differently. In 2022 he signed a five-year contract with Fortuna, where he would first play football and then start his career as a coach with the club. After one season, the French Ligue 1 winner opted for a return to Turkey.
On Sunday, Burak Yılmaz was interim coach for Beşiktaş as the Turkish giants beat İstanbulspor 2-0. The club are currently fourth in the Süper Lig and next up, they face Yılmaz’s former club, Galatasaray.
