Portuguese club Marítimo confirmed on Saturday that head coach Vítor Matos has left the club from Madeira island with immediate effect to take over at Swansea City.

In a statement on Instagram, Maritimo said: "Coach Vitor Matos will leave CS Marítimo to take charge of Swansea City, after the club activated a €1 million (£881,900) release clause on Friday."

Matos, who spent several years as an assistant to Jurgen Klopp, now returns to the UK to take charge of Swansea City, currently 19th in the English Championship.

Although he has only been a head coach since taking over at Marítimo in June, Swansea believe Matos is the right man to succeed Alan Sheehan, who was sacked last week.

Matos leaves the Madeirans in third place in the Portuguese  Second Division, with 20 points after a five-month stint.
