Free agent leftback Diego Palacios is leaving LAFC and Major League Soccer to head to Brazil. The 24 year old Ecuadorian international defender has signed with Corinthians in Brazil to continue his rising career. Palacios has arguably been the best leftback within MLS over the last two or three seasons playing for LAFC. During his time in the black and gold section of Los Angeles, Palacios won a MLS Cup as well as two Supporters’ Shield titles.
This leaves a giant hole on the left side of LAFC backline. The only other player on the LAFC roster who can regularly play leftback is Ryan Hollingshead who was the club’s starting rightback over the last few years. LAFC unfortunately lost one of their best talents with the departure of Palacios and one of the best talents in MLS. Part of me is frustrated by his signing in Brazil as he was going to be needing a massive payday to remain in Los Angeles and under current MLS rules, that was not going to happen. If only MLS has an opportunity before this window to allow for less roster restrictions…
