First team coach Darren Fletcher was in attendance as his sons, Tyler and Jack, dazzled in Manchester United U21s’ 5-1 triumph over West Bromwich Albion at Leigh Sports Village on Friday evening.
Head coach Travis Binnion was able to name a strong starting lineup, as the U18s are not in action this weekend.
The line-up included James Scanlon and Jack Fletcher, both of whom were on the bench for United’s Europa League win over Real Sociedad.
Defender Jayden Ngwashi was also handed his first involvement with the U21s.
United started the game brightly. Captain Habeeb Ogunneye squared the ball into the penalty area, but no one was there to tap it in.
Gabriel Biancheri opened the scoring for United in the 19th minute, finishing off a brilliant cross from Bendito Mantato. He has bagged 18 goals for the academy this season.
Two minutes later, Scanlon doubled United’s lead with a right-footed finish from a cross by left-back Sam Murray to register his 18th goal of the season.
The hosts grabbed their third goal not long after. Sekou Kone won the ball in midfield and teed up Biancheri, who then set up Bendito Mantato for the finish.
Jack Fletcher added to United’s advantage in the 41st minute with a first-time finish, assisted by his brother.
The young midfielder struck again three minutes later, netting his second goal of the night with another first-time finish from Tyler’s pass.
West Brom pulled one back in the 63rd minute when Harry Whitwell won a penalty and converted it. However, the goal proved to be only a consolation for the away side.
The victory ended United’s two-game winless streak, following defeats to Chelsea and Fulham in their previous matches.
United return to action when they face Leeds United at the LNER Community Stadium on March 31.
