James Garner Everton Move Explained as England Midfielder Backs Career Choice

James Garner has spelled it out clearly. Leaving Manchester United for Everton was the right decision, and he has no interest in dressing it up any other way.

The 25-year-old midfielder has forced his way back into the England squad after a strong start to the season, and the logic behind his rise is straightforward. He left a club where his path was blocked, joined one where minutes were available, and made himself useful. That is usually how careers move forward.

Garner spent nine years in United’s academy and briefly broke into the first team, but the bigger picture was obvious. Loans at Watford and Nottingham Forest gave him experience, and in 2022 Everton paid £15 million to sign him. Since then, he has built a proper Premier League role for himself.

Garner said, “I think it was the perfect thing for me to do.” That is hard to argue with. He also explained why the move suited him at that point in his career. “I’ve never been shy of going into a more uncomfortable place. I went on loan three times, I went to Watford and then twice to Nottingham Forest, so I moved early and moved down to London and to Nottingham, so I wasn’t worried about moving at all, changing scenery or anything that.

“For me, it was just about playing games and Everton was the perfect choice at that point. I didn’t just want to fizzle into the background and just sit on the bench and stuff like that, so I wanted to go into a team where I felt like I had a chance to fight for my position and that’s what I have done in the past three or four years.”

That matters. Players talk endlessly about development, but development without matches means very little. Garner has now been capped at every England age group, made his first two senior appearances in March, and is back in the squad for Nations League fixtures against Spain, Czechia and Croatia.

Thomas Tuchel had already hinted in May that Garner was close to making his 26-man World Cup squad. His recent form with Everton has pushed him back into the conversation at the right time.

Manchester United exit opened the door

When asked if he regretted leaving Old Trafford, Garner’s answer was blunt. “No, not really. I am a big believer that everything happens for a reason. When I left they signed three or four midfielders, world-class ones.

“Had I stayed, I wouldn’t have been where I am today, so I am more than happy that I left.”

That is the point. He chose football over status, and he is better off for it.
