Everton midfielder James Garner has been recalled to the England squad ahead of the upcoming UEFA Nations League matches.

Garner made his debut in a friendly against Uruguay before making his second appearance against Japan in March.

The 25-year-old’s recall follows the withdrawal of Arsenal’s Declan Rice, Manchester United’s Kobbie Mainoo and Chelsea’s Cole Palmer due to injuries.

Garner has been crucial to Everton’s unbeaten start to the season, starting four of their five Premier League games.

He ranks joint-second for tackles and fourth for interceptions per game in the Toffees squad. He averages more passes per game than any other Everton midfielder.

Garner will compete with Myles Lewis-Skelly, Elliot Anderson and Alex Scott for a place in Thomas Tuchel’s preferred two-man central midfield pairing.

Nottingham Forest midfielder Morgan Gibbs-White is also back in the squad following his impressive start to the season.

The 26-year-old has registered one goal and two assists in five Premier League games.

No player has created more big chances, and just two players have registered a higher key passes per game than him in the division.

Gibbs-White was excluded from the 2026 World Cup squad despite his impressive form last season. He now has the opportunity to impress Tuchel to stake a claim for future call-ups.

The Three Lions will begin preparations for their upcoming Nations League games on Tuesday. England will face Czechia twice, Spain and Croatia.

They finished third in the inaugural edition of the tournament in 2018/19 and have not bettered that finish since then.
