Jesus Vallejo was one of the few Real Madrid players who left in the summer after running out his contract at Santiago Bernabeu.
After finding no game-time or prominence under Carlo Ancelotti, the defender was allowed to go, as he ended up joining second-tier Spanish club Albacete.
In a recent interview with AS, Vallejo has opened up about his time at Real Madrid, his experience at Albacete so far and more importantly, he recalled the time when he rejected a move to Atletico Madrid.
Vallejo revealed that Atletico Madrid were one of the clubs that approached him during his time at Zaragoza youth academy, but he said no to the offer.
“When I was in Zaragoza’s youth system, teams like Villarreal and Atleti called me. At that moment, Zaragoza took a chance on me, and I said no. I decided to stay at Zaragoza because I felt wanted,” he said.
Vallejo, though, did not think twice about Real Madrid in 2015, but admitted that he was keen on staying at Zaragoza for another year, which he did through a loan deal.
“When Madrid arrived, it was different. I was on vacation and my agent told me he was going to make Zaragoza an offer for the value of my release clause, which was €5 million.
“I was very happy and eager to return to Zaragoza to settle in and settle things down. I was also excited to be able to stay at Zaragoza for another year,” he said.
Vallejo was at Real Madrid for ten years before leaving the club permanently last summer. Talking about his early days at the club, he notably hailed Cristiano Ronaldo.

“The one who impressed me most in the Madrid dressing room was Cristiano. His consistency and perseverance make him special and different. He had an impact on me, and he helps you in every way he can, giving you a lot of advice.
“In my first season at Madrid, I didn’t play much, but Zidane was always clear. He helps you at all times. He had clear roles, but he wasn’t immovable; you could earn your place,” he said.
Talking about his eventual return to Bernabeu after a series of loan spells at Granada, Vallejo said, “The Bernabeu is special. I noticed that players from PSG or City, who usually do everything perfectly, start making mistakes.
“The Bernabéu impresses you, and opponents notice. I’ve never played away, but I’ve noticed how the stadium has turned games around; opposing players feel that pressure.”
Vallejo also talked about Julen Lopetegui and how he was unfortunate to be joining the Real Madrid camp at the wrong time.
“It’s a shame Lopetegui didn’t stay at Madrid longer. He’s a great coach, but he arrived at a very demanding club at a difficult time. That year was very complicated. When Zidane arrived, he told us he was coming to suffer with us,” he said.
Finally, the centre-back recalled the famous 2022 Champions League semifinal game against Manchester City, where he came on to produce a stellar defensive display.
“In the famous tie against City, I remember Militao was feeling some discomfort, but I already knew he could play; he was ready. I was happy to play because I felt strong,” he concluded.
