Former Saints defender Jannik Vestergaard has retired from football, saying his motivation had gone. The 34-year-old had been without a club since leaving Leicester City in the summer.

"I've started to feel a sense of weariness. My motivation isn't just on the decline, but that it's no longer really there. It feels right to retire now." He told Politiken.

Vestergaard won 59 caps for Denmark, scoring three goals, and featured at major tournaments during his international career.

He joined Saints from Borussia Monchengladbach in 2018 and spent three seasons at St Mary's, making 79 appearances and scoring four goals.

With a year left on his deal, Saints accepted a £15million offer from Leicester in August 2021.

The centre-back made 118 appearances for the Foxes and helped them win the 2023/24 Championship title. He later left by mutual consent and chose not to sign elsewhere.
