Northern League Division One side Easington Colliery have signed former Sunderland academy forward Nathan Greenwood.
According to Sunderland Echo, the 25-year-old steps up from Division Two outfit Chester-le-Street Town after agreeing the move earlier this week.
Greenwood joined Sunderland’s Academy of Light from Seaham Red Star in the summer of 2019, spending the next 10 months alongside Dan Neil, Anthony Patterson and Bali Mumba. He returned to Red Star in July 2020 when his Black Cats contract ended, then featured for Whickham, Consett, West Auckland Town and Shildon.
Manager Olly Hotchkiss said he had long admired Greenwood during his time at Shildon and was delighted to bring him in. He described the forward as an exceptional talent who has trained impressively since arriving and looks ready to start quickly.
Hotchkiss also highlighted Greenwood’s work in pre-season, noting he set the pace in running drills, and said Easington beat strong competition to land him.
There is further movement at Welfare Park, with former Morpeth Town and Hebburn Town winger Joe Walton joining as a player-coach. Having managed Sunderland West End last season, Walton will add leadership to what Hotchkiss considers a young squad and will combine coaching duties with playing in the new campaign.
