Kenton Richardson has left Gateshead after his contract expired, ending a four-year spell at the International Stadium.
Sunderland Echo understands that new boss Lee Cattermole held positive talks with the defender two weeks ago, and that Richardson has accepted an offer to link up with Rob Elliot at Carlisle United.
The Durham-born right-back came through Hartlepool United’s academy, made 50 senior appearances, then joined Sunderland in summer 2020. He largely featured for the Under-23s and made three Papa John’s Trophy outings before signing for Gateshead after their National League North title.
At Gateshead he reached successive FA Trophy finals and won the competition for the first time, beating FC Halifax Town on penalties in 2024. He also helped the club reach the FA Cup proper rounds in three of his four seasons.
Gateshead sought to keep Richardson but no agreement was reached before his deal ended, and his departure has now been announced.
Elsewhere, the Heed are pursuing winger Harry Chapman and have given new deals to Tyrelle Newton, Preston Leech, Lucas Lowery and Ben Williams. Brad Nicholson has joined Carlisle on a two-year deal, reuniting with Elliot and Louis Storey.
Former Sunderland youngster Tommy Lavery is the only new arrival. Pre-season begins on Wednesday, with the first friendly at Blyth Town next Tuesday, and the club remain confident of further additions as Cattermole starts his first campaign as a first-team manager.
