Bruno Genesio has addressed the tensions surrounding Igor Paixao’s proposed move to Sunderland, following a fraught window at Olympique de Marseille.

"It is my job to alert my superiors to the sporting consequences of such a decision… it is also a question of the club’s survival. We need to be able to – at the same time – adapt to the club’s economic context, whilst also keeping some sporting prerogatives. I was lucky – I was heard," said the OM manager, speaking to Ligue 1 Plus.

Greenwood, Facundo Medina, Geronimo Rulli, Leonardo Balerdi and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang all departed, yet Marseille were still unable to spend due to obligations to the DNCG and UEFA.

As the deadline approached, further exits were discussed, including Paixao, who was in talks with Sunderland. Reports at the time said Genesio strongly opposed a sale, with resignation even floated.

After the window shut, club president Stéphane Richard said Genesio was close to breaking point over Paixao. He said he campaigned for the Brazilian to stay and added that owner Frank McCourt ultimately made the decision.
