Gateshead have confirmed the departure of Kenton Richardson after his contract expired, ending a four-year spell he felt was the right time to conclude.
Sunderland Echo understands that new boss Lee Cattermole held positive talks with the defender following his appointment two weeks ago. Richardson had interest from EFL and National League clubs and has accepted an offer from Carlisle United to reunite with Rob Elliot.
The Durham-born defender came through Hartlepool’s academy and made 50 senior appearances before joining Sunderland in 2020. He featured for the Black Cats in the Papa John’s Trophy and had loans at Notts County and Spennymoor Town before signing for Gateshead after their National League North title.
Richardson helped Gateshead reach back-to-back FA Trophy finals, lifting the cup in 2024 after a penalty shootout against FC Halifax Town. He was also part of sides that reached the FA Cup proper in three of his four seasons.
He reflected on a period that brought the proudest moments of his career, including two Wembley trips, captaining the club and the frustration of being unable to compete in the 2024 play-offs. He expressed gratitude to team-mates, staff, supporters and volunteers, and felt it was the perfect time to move on.
Gateshead return for pre-season on Wednesday, with their first friendly at Blyth Town next Tuesday. The club are working to add to Cattermole’s squad in the coming weeks.
