England reached the World Cup quarter-finals by edging co-hosts Mexico at the Azteca, but former Sunderland star Jordan Henderson suffered a freak wrist injury while celebrating.

According to Sunderland Echo, England manager Thomas Tuchel said Henderson had been taken to a hospital in Mexico City. Reports have suggested he will remain there for treatment rather than return to England’s Kansas City base.

Two goals from Real Madrid midfielder Jude Bellingham and a Harry Kane penalty decided an eventful last-16 tie in front of a 100,000-strong crowd.

England played for more than 40 minutes with 10 men after former Liverpool defender Jarell Quansah was shown a straight red card following a VAR review of his challenge on Jesus Gallardo.

Henderson, an unused substitute, fell awkwardly over an advertising board while celebrating with team-mates in front of the travelling support.

Tuchel described mixed emotions, praising his side’s mentality on what he called a special night, but saying he was saddened by Henderson’s injury and that it was serious. He added he did not yet know the next steps.
