Although Hervé Renard’s arrival in March will have given the team a boost after Corinne Diacre’s tumultuous spell in charge, the French national team could yet be facing another crisis ahead of the World Cup – this time, with the injuries piling up.

Lyon have announced that forward Delphine Cascarino, who went off injured in the title decider against Paris Saint-Germain last weekend, has suffered an partial anterior cruciate ligament injury.

The French international, who won the double with her club this season, will now miss out on several months of action, and will be absent from Renard’s squad for the tournament in Australia and New Zealand, which takes place from July 20 to August 20.

Cascarino joins another likely absentee on the sidelines in Paris Saint-Germain striker Marie-Antoinette Katoto, who according to Le Parisien will not recover in time from a knee ligament injury she sustained during last July’s Euros, which has kept her out of action for the entirety of the current season. Although her recovery is going well, the Parisians are reportedly not prepared to green light her return for the time being. The chances of Kadidiatou Diani being back in time for the tournament, though, are looking better, following a collarbone injury in April. Les Bleues will take on Ireland on July 6 and Australia on July 14 in their warm-up matches before the World Cup.
