The French will take on a familiar foe when the UEFA Nations League campaign resumes next year. Didier Deschamps’ men finished top of Group 2 on Sunday thanks to a 3-1 victory over Italy, edging out Gli Azzuri on goal difference.
Following the conclusion of the opening phase of this competition on Monday, we know that Les Bleus will face either Denmark, the Netherlands, or Croatia in the last eight, all of whom finished second in their respective groups.
France have faced all three of those teams at this tournament before, though never in the knockout stage.
Months after winning the 2018 World Cup, the French played against the Dutch in the inaugural Nations League tournament, winning the opening match in that head-to-head series at the Stade de France (2-1) and losing the return engagement in Rotterdam (2-0).
In the 2022-23 Nations League campaign, Les Bleus were drawn into a group with the Croats and Danes, failing to win a single game against either, and exiting the competition in the group phase.
We will officially discover who the 2020-21 Nations League winners will face on Friday following the draw in Switzerland. The quarter-final ties take place in late March.
