Franck Haise enjoyed a serene first outing as Rennes head coach, his side winning 3-0 at Auxerre while he downplayed any personal acclaim.
As reported by L'Équipe, Mahdi Camara scored twice and Estéban Lepaul got the other. After the whistle Haise spoke with chairman Guillaume Cerutti as the players thanked the away end, then said the focus was continuity from Friday’s 3-1 win over PSG under interim Sébastien Tambouret.
Since Wednesday he has tried to extend that feel. He shared breakfast with club staff and reconnected with familiar faces. He also met Camara to clear last summer’s dispute over his late switch to Rennes rather than Nice, agreeing to move on as the midfielder’s industry recalled his Brest years.
Haise retained the PSG-beating XI and the team looked looser and more enterprising. They defended in a back four and found patterns. Lepaul said instructions were light, with freedom to express themselves and an emphasis on consistency.
After only four sessions, work centred on defensive organisation and small attacking tweaks. The set-up was a four-three-three, Valentin Rongier deepest with Camara and Sebastian Szymanski as eights. Breel Embolo and Ludovic Blas came on in the 67th minute, and 19-year-old Henrick Do Marcolino made his Ligue 1 debut.
Haise said Rennes are still embedding ideas and have plenty to improve. They will not always face opponents as permissive as Auxerre, yet this was an uplifting start that won over supporters. Rennes are fifth, three points behind Habib Beye’s OM.
