Rennes appointed Franck Haise as head coach on Wednesday, replacing Habib Beye.
The club said in a statement that he has signed until 2027, highlighting his 200 Ligue 1 games as a head coach.
Haise, 54, previously led Lens and Nice, leaving the latter at the end of December. He returns to a club he knows from 2006 to 2012 as an academy coach, and he had often been linked whenever Rennes were seeking a manager.
Beye was removed on 9 February after a run of four defeats and appeared to have lost the confidence of his hierarchy and players. He is strongly tipped to take the Marseille job, though that move is currently blocked by a dispute with Rennes over the financial terms of his exit.
Rennes, currently sixth in Ligue 1, revived with a surprise 3-1 win over Paris SG on Friday and are in line for the Europa League. There are 12 league games left for the Rouge et Noir to pursue a continental return after two seasons out.
Haise will take charge of his first match on Sunday at Auxerre, who are 16th, on matchday 23.
