Marseille’s supporters voiced their anger at the Vélodrome on Sunday night, unveiling banners aimed at owner Frank McCourt, club executives and players during the 1-1 draw with Nice.
Minutes before kick-off, the stands displayed incendiary messages. According to L'Équipe, multiple banners were unfurled amid a season of inconsistent results and growing doubts over the project. Marseille are sixth, four points off the Champions League places.
McCourt was urged to summon agents, demand accountability, enforce respect for the institution, and stop paying or dismiss those deemed at fault. Team-mates of Pierre-Emile Höjbjerg were accused of surrendering rather than fighting after just one win in the last five matches.
Senior management were branded unambitious and evasive, with supporters pointing to a long-running lack of sporting direction. Another message cast doubt over 26-27, warning the club does not know where it is going and is on course for a crash.
Across the ground, similar slogans lamented fading targets, noting an initial ambition of the Champions League had given way, nine months on, to the prospect of the Europa Conference League or nothing.
In a stadium that often drives the team on, the crowd chose to raise the volume. Marseille have 53 points and three matches left to change course, starting at Nantes on Saturday at 15:00.
