The Sky Blues boss has outlined the club’s approach to the upcoming January transfer window.
Coventry City boss Frank Lampard has outlined their plans for the upcoming January transfer window, admitting the club will have to strike a balance between having a healthy squad and increasing the quality of it for the second half of the season.
The Sky Blues have made a fabulous start to the 2025-26 Championship campaign, sitting five points clear at the summit of the table and only tasting one defeat from their opening 15 league outings.
After suffering heartbreak in the play-offs over the course of the last two seasons, Coventry supporters may finally be feeling that it is their time to get promoted to the big time, as the relegated trio of Ipswich Town, Southampton and Leicester City are failing to pull up any trees despite being dominant from a financial perspective.
Of course, it’s only a quarter of the way through the term and nothing is sealed yet, but if Coventry can come through a hectic Christmas period still at the top of the table, then you do get the feeling that they will be the team to catch.
The January transfer window could also be a potentially pivotal time for Coventry to keep the squad well-equipped for the challenges that lie ahead, with a host of teams hopeful of being busy in order to bolster their ranks and propel themselves up the table.
It’s something Coventry will have to be wary of and may have to act on themselves to ensure squad depth is kept intact over such a relentless period.
And the Sky Blues boss has opened up on their plans for the upcoming window, revealing the dilemma he and the club face at the turn of the year.

As reported by the Coventry Telegraph, Coventry City boss Frank Lampard has opened up on their plans for the upcoming January transfer window, believing his team is nowhere near the ‘finished article’ and requires additions, but is wary of not having too big of a squad that can cause player unrest.
Lampard said: “I think we’ve worked really hard for this. We’ve worked really hard from the New Year, from being 17th to being in this position, so I think credit to everyone involved in that as a club.
“So I think we’ve made the stars align, and I agree, this is a long season. I’m the first one that has to be grounded. Everybody can get excited after another win the other day, but I understand how quickly this game can change for so many different factors.
“But what we can do is control what we do and if we’re in that position in January then, certainly, I’ll be going, ‘how can we be the best going forward?’"
“There are so many things because you don’t want too big a squad, you don’t want too many players that are not happy, not feeling that they’re part of it,” said the City boss, “but you do have to make sure that you can really compete if and when the duration of the season becomes an issue.
“We’ve seen it before, and it’s worth looking at other models because you look at teams, probably parachute teams that have come down, probably pretty loaded squads from the start of the season with the Premier League players, and we’re different. We don’t have that.
“But we have a real togetherness with good players that are developing all the time, but I never want to rest on that. I’m ambitious to say, can we help and improve because I think there absolutely is improvement for this squad.
“We’re nowhere near what we would want to be in a finished article and the minute you think you are near it the game will kick you in the backside. So yeah, it’s something for January, but we have to start preparing right now.”

There’s no doubt Coventry City are flying right now under Frank Lampard, with the Chelsea icon managing to get so much out this group of players.
Their +27-goal difference speaks volumes of how ruthless they’ve been so far this term, and it looks like there is no signs of it letting up any time soon.
Of course, as a manager, Lampard will always be on the lookout for more quality in the squad to cement a promotion push to the Premier League, but he is also right to be thinking about the potential of player unrest should certain well-stocked areas of the squad be added to further.
For example, the Sky Blues shouldn’t be considering adding to the central midfield department with Josh Eccles, Victor Torp, Jamie Allen, Kai Andrews and Jack Rudoni already on the books, but a move for an additional left-winger may be need to be considered given Ephron Mason-Clark is their only recognised option on that flank at the moment.
There is still a lot of football to be played between now and January, so much of the plans will depend on whether the Sky Blues have managed to keep themselves at the top of the table or have slipped away.
For now, it’s best for Lampard and his team to focus on the pitch, and address the squad situation based on the results they pick up over the next couple of months.
