Frankfurt end Freiburg’s winning streak in four-goal thriller | OneFootball

SC Freiburg came from behind twice to keep their unbeaten start to the season in Frankfurt. The hosts only have five points after the first four games of the Bundesliga campaign.

The all-white Freiburg had the first attempt on goal with Derry Scherhant’s curling effort from inside the box. The visitors had a strong start, but they went behind after a well-worked move by Adi Hütter’s side.

Ritsu Doan sets up Younes Ebnoutalib’s fourth goal of the season with an unselfish play after excellent play from Lilian Brassier and Jonathan Burkardt. The former Morocco youth international Ebnoutalib will be joining Jürgen Klopp’s squad in the international break as he chooses to represent Germany at senior level.

Despite going behind for the first time, Julian Schuster’s men continued to dictate the majority of possession. Noah Atubolu had to be alert to deny his former teammates as Frankfurt's goal didn’t change the complexion of the game.

It was Scherhant who broke Atubolu’s resistance when Freiburg got their deserved equalizer ten minutes before the break. The 23-year-old scored his first league goal of the season with a tidy finish after Jordy Makengo spotted his run.

However, the hosts responded a couple of minutes later. Jonathan Burkardt scored from close-range after Robin Koch headed Can Uzun’s corner-kick to his direction. Freiburg shot-stopper Mio Backhaus saw a yellow card for protesting the goal in hopes of a foul in the buildup.

At the other end, Atubolu could’ve done better for Scherhant’s goal, but the new Germany international denied the winger from leveling the score once again with an important touch to force his free-kick into the post.

But he was beaten three minutes after the restart with yet another superb attacking play from the visitors. Yuito Suzuki provided a brilliant finish after Makengo and Scherhant combined well on the left flank.

The lively Scherhant hit the sidenetting with the next big chance of an all-action game. Makengo and Doan came close to adding goals to their previous assists as the teams continued to carve out chances.

The hosts, who were boosted by the returns of Nnamdi Collins, Ansgar Knauff and Oscar Højlund from injuries, had their best spell of the game in the next 20 minutes. Nonetheless, Uzun failed to put them in front for the third time from his two clear-cut opportunities.

Freiburg regained control after that, but they were only restricted to half-chances. Schuster saw his side’s winning streak come to an end, although they are level on points with the champions FC Bayern. Eintracht Frankfurt are still looking for their first home win of the season.

After the international break, Eintracht Frankfurt will face RB Leipzig away from home in Topspiel action. The Eagles lost 6-0 in Leipzig last season. Freiburg will be involved in the last fixture of matchday 5, with a home game against newcomers Schalke.
