According to L'Équipe, the French Football Federation will offer an immersive augmented reality tour of Clairefontaine during its FFF Tour, a first for the body.
Augmented reality is among the innovations that could change how sport is watched on television. It is already widely used in the United States for the NBA, Nascar, American football and concerts. In Spain, Real Madrid has partnered with Apple so its matches can also be viewed this way on subscription.
PurProd Immersive has run trials in France, including at Roland-Garros and PSG, and has produced for the FFF an augmented reality film that lets users visit the Institut National du Football de Clairefontaine in Yvelines, where Didier Deschamps’s France squad are preparing for the World Cup in the United States, Mexico and Canada, 11 June-19 July. The experience covers all buildings on the Rambouillet Forest site, including the château where the team stay and Kylian Mbappé’s room.
An estimated 28 million augmented reality headsets have been sold in the United States and more than 1 million in France. Unlike a traditional television broadcast, only four cameras are needed. The stereoscopic video delivers depth perception.
The experience will be among the activities on offer, alongside beach soccer, golf foot, cécifoot, quizzes and DJ Live. The tour starts on 4 and 5 July in Dunkerque and finishes on 19 and 29 August in Bormes-les Mimosas. Thirteen stops across France are scheduled.
