Laurent Bonadei must prepare for France’s upcoming friendly without a key weapon in the attack. Eugénie Le Sommer (35) was ruled out for the women’s team, who will face Switzerland in a friendly on Tuesday in Geneva.
The record goalscorer for the national team (93 goals) came on after an hour in their match against Jamaica last week, the debut match for Bonadei as manager, which saw Les Bleues win 3-0.
After the match, Le Sommer had an MRI, which revealed she has a muscle injury in her right thigh.
Le Sommer has gone through her share of injury setbacks for both the national team and her club side, Olympique Lyonnais.
Throughout the Paris Olympics this past summer, Le Sommer saw little action because of a recurring knee issue. Her absence adds to the list of players likely to miss Tuesday’s friendly in Switzerland, with Sakina Karchaoui (29) dealing with an ankle strain.
Elisa de Almeida (26) has a sore foot, Griedge Mbock Bathy (29) and Marie-Antoinette Katoto (25) have muscle discomfort, while Sandie Toletti (29) and Naomie Feller (22) are recovering from minor knocks.
Bonadei says he will not call up someone else to replace Le Sommer for this upcoming fixture. The French women play two more matches this year, a friendly versus Switzerland on Tuesday, before welcoming the reigning world champions Spain to Allianz Rivera in Nice on December 3.
The eight-time women’s Champions League winner has made 195 appearances for the senior women’s team, three fewer than Sandrine Soubeyrand for the most all-time in the history of Les Bleues.
