One of the 2025-26 season’s major controversies took place on September 20, when the Tractor Boys and Rovers met each other.

Blackburn were leading with over 10 minutes left in the contest thanks to a Todd Cantwell penalty, against an Ipswich side down to 10 men after Jacob Greaves was given his marching orders not long into the second half.

It seemed like Blackburn were set to see out the final stages of the clash and earn a brilliant three points, until the heavens opened and an onslaught of torrential rain was unleashed upon the Ewood Park surface.

The pitch quickly became unplayable, and referee Stephen Martin was forced to abandon proceedings. Arguments ensued from both clubs about what should happen next, with Rovers understandably aggrieved at the prospect of having all their hard work undone.

However, it was determined that the match would be replayed in full on December 2, and with that date almost upon us, there have been new fears over whether the match will be played.

Naturally, everyone involved with Ipswich Town will hold immediate reservations about revisiting Ewood Park, especially in early December.

Two Championship home matches had been called off for Rovers in the space of 10 months, as Portsmouth were forced to reschedule last season due to another waterlogged pitch.

It has now been reported that the situation at Ewood Park is being closely monitored, after a yellow weather warning for East Lancashire was issued.

From midnight on Sunday, November 30, until 3 am on Tuesday, December 2, 20 millimetres to 40 millimetres of rain is predicted to fall in the area, which is likely to cause some panic amongst all sets of fans.

Whilst 27 hours of heavy rain and strong wind are set to hit the area, it has been reported by Rovers to Ipswich, as per the Ipswich Star, that there are currently no concerns about whether the fixture can go ahead, meaning the pitch should be in good condition for the visit of the Tractor Boys.

WIth the weather warning not due to end until the early hours of Tuesday though, it remains to be seen how well the Ewood Park turf will soak in the incliment conditions.

Ipswich Town will hope to avoid another weather-affected clash after Blackburn Rovers controversy

There are a number of reasons why Ipswich will be desperately hoping another postponement isn’t coming their way, including the lengthy travel from Suffolk to East Lancashire.

However, from a footballing point of view, this game has come at the right moment for them.

The Tractor Boys have matches against Coventry City and Stoke City coming up, who have been two of the division’s best teams this term.

If Kieran McKenna’s side can get a good result against Blackburn, it would lift them to within three points of the automatic promotion places and 13 behind league leaders Coventry.

Using the momentum gained from their potential Rovers victory, Ipswich could use the talent within their squad to reduce the gap to Coventry further and set up a title charge.
