Important decisions are on the horizon at the executive level for FC Bayern. In addition to Max Eberl and Jan-Christian Dreesen, Christoph Freund’s contract also expires in 2027. In his case, however, the decision lies in other hands.

FC Bayern is not only working on its roster for the new season but is also currently setting the course for the coming years at the executive level. Several key contracts are set to expire in the summer of 2027. In addition to sporting director Max Eberl and CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen, this also applies to sporting director Christoph Freund.

While it already appears likely that the club will continue its collaboration with Eberl and Dreesen, a decision regarding Freund has yet to be made. However, this does not mean that the 49-year-old’s future with the German record champions is fundamentally in question.

According to information from Sport BILD, FC Bayern officials are very satisfied with Freund’s work. Accordingly, the Munich club is planning for the long term with its sporting director.

Board to Decide on Freund’s Future

What’s particularly interesting is who at FC Bayern will decide on a new contract for Freund. While the appointments of Eberl and Dreesen fall under the supervisory board’s jurisdiction, the situation is different for the sporting director.

Since Freund is not a member of the executive board, the FC Bayern executive board will decide on his future. Consequently, the relevant time constraints that apply to decisions made by the supervisory board do not apply to this personnel matter.

A decision regarding the Austrian’s future can therefore be made independently of the upcoming decisions concerning Eberl and Dreesen. There is no time pressure yet anyway; after all, Freund’s current contract runs through the summer of 2027.

Given the developments of recent years, it comes as no surprise that Bayern is generally interested in continuing the collaboration. Freund moved from Red Bull Salzburg to Munich in September 2023, where he took on the role of sporting director. Since Eberl assumed the position of sporting director in March 2024, the two have been working closely together on squad planning.

Head coach Vincent Kompany is also an important part of the club’s sporting leadership structure. In recent months, club officials have repeatedly emphasized how closely Eberl, Freund, and Kompany collaborate on transfers and the team’s development.

Bayern is planning for the long term with Freund

Freund also plays a particularly important role in youth development. The integration between the youth academy and the professional team is one of the areas where FC Bayern is placing increased emphasis. Talented players are to be introduced to the first team’s level as early as possible and, if they develop accordingly, given their chance under Kompany.

Eberl and Freund are also working together during the current transfer window to further develop the roster. With Ismael Saibari and Nathaniel Brown, the Munich club secured two key new signings early on. At the same time, the long-term plan is for the team to consist of a core of established professionals and several young players with development potential.

While Eberl and Dreesen are now preparing the next steps toward contract extensions, Bayern does not have to follow the same timeline with Freund. Nevertheless, the key message is clear: the sporting director enjoys a high level of trust within the club. According to information from Sport BILD, club officials are planning for the long term with Freund—though the formal decision on this must be made by Bayern’s executive board.
