Manchester City are reportedly discussing a blockbuster proposal for Atalanta and Brazil international midfielder Ederson, according to new reports.

It is a largely surprising development given the somewhat clear targets being worked on by officials within the Etihad Stadium, as the club aim to bring in fresh energy and faces into the squad ahead of the FIFA Club World Cup.

With Kevin De Bruyne officially out of the door as he closes in on a free transfer move to Napoli this summer, the likes of Lyon’s Rayan Cherki and Nottingham Forest’s Morgan Gibbs-White are ambitions for the attacking midfield role in Pep Guardiola’s squad.

Elsewhere and there is expected to be an arrival in the deeper midfield roles as AC Milan’s Tijjani Reijnders targets a switch to Manchester City, who are continuing their negotiations over a transfer fee with the Italian giants.

And while there is expected to be further business done in other areas of the squad, a new rumour has surfaced which suggests that the aforementioned trio of midfielders may not be the end of the focus in the middle of the park.

According to the information of journalist Jorge Nicola, Atalanta’s Éderson could join Manchester City this summer, with officials at the Etihad Stadium said to be discussing a proposal of €70 million with the Serie A club.

Recruitment staff at City are likely to face intense competition for the player though, with Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich also credited with an interest alongside Liverpool and Manchester United of the Premier League.

The 25-year-old was heavily linked with a move to Manchester City during the last January transfer window too, with the club on the hunt for a capable stand-in for Rodri as the Spaniard continued his recovery from an ACL operation.

Ultimately, the likes of Hugo Viana and Txiki Begiristain would finalise a deal with FC Porto to bring long-standing midfield target Nico Gonzalez to the club, while Pep Guardiola has since hinted that he sees the Spaniard as a ‘No.8’ in his roster.

Speaking after Manchester City’s final home game of last season, in which Nico recorded a sumptuous strike on the counter-attack as part of a 3-1 win over Bournemouth, Pep Guardiola was keen to praise the former Barcelona starlet.

“Nico is a fantastic guy, he can play holding midfielder, he can play more in front, made a fantastic goal. And of course it’s good news that Rodri is back – still he’s on the way, he needs months and months, but the first step, he did it,” he told reporters.
