From Mallorca to Anoeta, Tony Ramos chases his Real Sociedad Copa dream

Tony Ramos, a Real Sociedad devotee from Puigcerdá who lives in Mallorca, was at the first leg in San Mamés, saw the win at Son Moix, and will be at Anoeta on Wednesday to complete the set. According to Diario Vasco, the return against Athletic could bring a club-record crowd of more than 39,000.

Ramos has followed La Real for more than 40 years and is covering more than 2,200 kilometres to watch the whole tie live. He felt Athletic were left in it in Bilbao, so he wants to be there for the return.

In the eighties he played ice hockey in Puigcerdá, often facing Txuri Urdin in San Sebastián during Real’s title-winning era. A visit to Atotxa sealed his allegiance, and he later tattooed the club crest on his leg after a 1-4 defeat to Barcelona.

In the past three weeks he has seen 0-1 wins at San Mamés and Son Moix, and he would take another tight result on Wednesday or even a draw to reach Sevilla. He lands in Donostia today, flying via Hondarribia to eat at Bar Antonio before the match.

He is cautiously upbeat, saying Real are stronger, though Athletic have improved and regained players, and he hopes they need time to find rhythm. He also argues Aymeric Laporte was in a positional offside for the league derby’s late goal and felt a first-leg handball went unpunished, while backing Mikel Oyarzabal and fancying Ander Barrenetxea as an impact substitute.
