From Sevilla to San Mamés, a father, son and grandson travelled nearly 1,000 kilometres to fulfil a family dream, watching Athletic at La Catedral. Their devotion began years ago and has passed from one generation to the next.

El Correo reports that the club shared the family’s story on Sunday via its social channels. The trip held extra meaning, as one relative was returning after many years and the grandfather, aged 90, was seeing the ground for the first time, which he called a beautiful sight.

The allegiance arrived in an unusual way. While relatives backed Atlético de Madrid, one brother, called Dani and named after Daniel Ruiz Bazán, sparked a passion for the Basque club.

Over time, following Athletic became central to their lives. They speak of it as a near religion, valuing the club’s people and their fighting spirit, and say the bond has only grown.

The next generation kept the flame. The youngest was named Julen, in honour of Julen Guerrero, and his father says a few words were enough to bring him along.

For them, Athletic means meeting every Sunday, the three of them together, to enjoy football and the team. This time the ritual moved to its original setting, experienced in person at San Mamés.
