Ernesto Valverde, long courted by Valencia, has chosen to take a year off and will not coach this season. According to El Correo, the former Athletic manager was the preferred option for sporting director Braulio Vázquez and had excited supporters.

He spent the weekend in the city for personal reasons. A keen photographer, he visited an exhibition and also stopped at one of his favourite spots, Rausell.

On Friday he lunched there with Salvador González, better known as Voro. The pair remain friends from Valverde’s stint in the second half of the 2012-13 campaign.

The meeting was purely social, and there is no prospect of him taking the Valencia job at present.

Braulio Vázquez has the arrival of Javier Aguirre well advanced, an experienced LaLiga coach to rescue Valencia from their difficult situation.

Valverde intends to enjoy time away from the touchline and return when a project truly appeals.
