From the Regionaliga to the Bundesliga via Belgium? Mateo Biondic is the latest Union St Gilloise success story from the lower reaches of German football | OneFootball

Mateo Biondic is having a fantastic season. The 23-year-old joined Union St Gilloise last summer from the German fourth tier side Eintracht Trier. Biondic has had a short spell with SC Verl in the 3 Liga, playing five games before dropping down into the fourth tier with Trier. After seven goals in 17 games during the 2025/2026 season, Biondic was picked up by Union St Gilloise. The Belgian side are the best at finding value in places people don’t often look, and the lower reaches of German football have been somewhere Union are always looking. Deniz Undav and Gustaf Nilsson both came from the 3 Liga or below and went on to have success. Biondic is following in their footsteps.

He was fast tracked into making his debut last season as Union struggled with injuries up top. He looked okay, with four goals and two assists in 18 games. Yet over the summer it is clear that Biondic and Union have been working hard to get him up to speed in the Belgian Pro League. So far so good, with Biondic scoring his third goal of the season at the weekend. Yet, he is more than just a goal scorer. The German forward has also picked up four assists as he looks to become a focal point for Union in attack as both finisher and provider.

For the rest of the Belgian Pro League, it will be another source of frustration to see Union once again hit on an unlikely success story in the transfer window. With Promise David having taken his goals with him to Brighton, Union needed someone else to step up. So far Biondic, alongside summer signing Relebohile Mofokeng, are doing their best to keep Union fighting for trophies in Belgium.

Given his past in Germany, it would not be surprising if Biondic begins to garner significant interest from the Bundesliga. Undav used Union as a means to propel himself into being one of the best strikers in Germany and a regular for the national team. Biondic may be hoping to follow in the Stuttgart strikers footsteps. So far, he is certainly doing himself plenty of favours with strong performances as the main striker at league leaders Union St Gilloise.
