Arsenal’s search for a new sporting director has intensified, with former Atlético Madrid executive Andrea Berta emerging as the frontrunner to replace Edu, according to reports.

The 53-year-old Italian, who spent more than a decade at Atlético Madrid before leaving earlier this year, is said to be in advanced talks with the Gunners hierarchy, though no agreement has yet been finalised.

Berta’s candidacy has gained traction due to his proven track record in squad building, talent acquisition, and financial management, skills that align with Arsenal’s long-term project under Mikel Arteta.

During his time in Madrid, Berta played a key role in securing top talents such as Antoine Griezmann, Rodri, and Jan Oblak, while also agreeing João Félix’s €127 million transfer from Benfica, which was more than €50m over his value at the time.

Under his watch, Atlético won two La Liga titles, the Europa League, and the UEFA Super Cup.

Arsenal have been methodical in their search since Edu’s shock departure in November. The Brazilian, who had been instrumental in Arsenal’s resurgence, left to take up a new role working alongside Nottingham Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis.

In the interim, Edu’s former deputy, Jason Ayto, has overseen operations, but the club is eager to secure a permanent successor before the summer transfer window.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Arsenal had considered a four-man shortlist that included Monaco CEO Thiago Scuro, former Manchester United sporting director Dan Ashworth, and Real Sociedad’s Roberto Olabe.

However, Berta now leads the race, with his extensive experience and availability making him an attractive option.

While Berta remains the frontrunner, the appointment is yet to be confirmed. The Athletic recently reported that Arsenal hoped to have a permanent successor to Edu in place by March, ensuring the new sporting director has ample time to prepare for the club’s summer recruitment drive.

With Arteta reportedly favouring Olabe, who won’t be available until the summer, and competition from other European clubs, Arsenal’s decision in the coming weeks will be pivotal for their long-term strategy.
