FSG near prime condition to sell Liverpool Football Club

FSG are nearing the prime conditions for the sale of Liverpool Football Club. Could this be it?

There is continued rumour that Fenway Sports Group could be looking to sell Liverpool FC in the near future. That's been in the background for a little while, at least, even if it hasn't actually led anywhere.

But now the signs are starting to show that something is happening. The first major sign? That the multi-club project is over with. The Athletic are reporting that as of Friday, with FSG no longer pursuing a new football team.

It's a shock. Michael Edwards was brought in specifically to oversee that project as FSG's CEO of Football just two years ago. That has led to nothing beyond Liverpool, with a series of attempts to buy a club - or at least find one to buy - ultimately falling flat.

Now, there are several reasons why FSG are pulling the plug on the plan. No matter which you believe, though, the fact is they're not as gung-ho on football as they were.

That's particularly interesting as the NBA looks to expand itself with two new teams. The presumed New Vegas team is a ridiculously lucrative venture - far beyond anything in football.

That's relevant here because FSG have been continuously linked with an interest in the Vegas franchise. That will cost around $8bn and may well necessitate the sale of other assets in order to fund it.

Like, say, Liverpool.

Prime conditions to sell

Selling Liverpool is both easy and difficult. Buyers aplenty but how many will pay the maximum price? Not many.

Thus FSG would need to get the club into a prime condition for a sale. Whether they're actually looking to sell or not, there's no question that they're currently doing that.

Edwards, Liverpool sporting director Richard Hughes, and head coach Arne Slot are all contracted merely until 2027. Any buyer would in fact be able to bring in their own team with little trouble.

The club's highest earners, too, are set to leave. Mo Salah and Virgil van Dijk, the top two, are both contracted to? You guessed it: 2027.
