Gabigol explained on Wednesday why he went straight to the dressing room after being substituted during Santos’ 1-1 draw with Recoleta in the Copa Sudamericana, citing abdominal pain and a breakdown in communication.

The player said in a social media post that some team-mates and staff also experienced abdominal discomfort. He expressed disappointment at letting another result slip and urged focus on Sunday’s important home game, saying they need a win alongside their supporters.

Gabigol, Santos’ leading scorer in 2026, was replaced by Thaciano midway through the second half with his side 1-0 up.

Cuca planned to ask the forward why he had not remained on the bench. He considered the change necessary, felt the striker should have stayed, and indicated he would be held to account.

A late equaliser left the match 1-1 and Santos in a difficult position in Group D. They are bottom on three points with only two games left to try to progress.
