Santos twice led but lost 3-2 to Fluminense at Vila Belmiro in round 12, with Gabigol scoring one and creating another.
According to Diario Do Peixe, Gabigol was Santos' standout, heavily involved throughout with a goal, an assist and another chance missed. The report described Neymar’s display as quiet.
Goalkeeper Gabriel Brazão was culpable for the second, coming out poorly while looking for a foul, and for the third. Igor Vinícius was caught out for the third and offered little going forward, while Lucas Veríssimo was below recent form, arriving late on Castillo for the second. Luan Peres endured another shaky outing.
Head coach Cuquinha improved the left side at half-time but could not fix the midfield. Rafael Gonzaga came on combative, yet two concessions arrived down his flank. Lautaro Díaz looked lost and was admonished by Cuquinha for his positioning.
Barreal struggled as a full-back, leaving space and misplacing passes, then, as a forward, struck a superb goal. Willian Arão won the ball for the opener and impressed with his passing and tackles. Gustavo Henrique marked diligently and outran his team-mates.
Gabriel Bontempo began brightly, combining neatly with Gabigol, but faded as the game wore on. Neymar missed a huge chance to make it 3-2 when the match was level at 2-2, while Moisés was anonymous before the break. Rollheiser brought his usual energy and Thaciano featured too briefly to judge.
