Santos have unveiled Philippe Coutinho, a Vasco da Gama academy graduate, and Gabigol marked the news by needling Vasco on social media.

According to Coluna Do Fla, the Flamengo idol posted a line on X, formerly Twitter, that echoed a terrace song long associated with Coutinho’s return to the Rio club.

The chant, used when the midfielder came back from Europe, trumpeted that Coutinho was back, talked up banking three points, and promised a party at Barreira. Flamengo fans flooded the replies, many cheering the jab at a rival.

Gabigol’s standing at Flamengo rests on decisive moments, most famously the 2019 Libertadores final, when he struck twice late on against River Plate to seal a dramatic turnaround.

In February 2026, Coutinho requested to terminate his Vasco contract, citing severe mental and emotional strain after boos and insults at São Januário, with fans also calling for his exit.

More recently, Santos beat Vasco 3-0 in the second round of the Brasileirão. Gabigol scored and, after being labelled “mulambo” by rival fans, responded that he is indeed a Flamengo supporter.
