Gabriel Bontempo was forced off before half-time with thigh pain as Santos beat Macará 2-1 at Vila Belmiro in the Copa Sudamericana last-16 first leg, and he now awaits tests that could determine his availability.
He was replaced by Rollheiser on 42 minutes after feeling discomfort, and explained he chose to come off to avoid aggravating the issue, according to Diario Do Peixe.
The midfielder said the area was sore, added he hopes it is nothing serious, and will undergo scans. Asked about featuring this weekend, he admitted he did not know and stressed any decision depends on medical evaluation.
Bontempo also noted he is comfortable on the right or as a number eight, and is ready to play wherever required to help the team.
The result gives Santos a narrow lead to take into next Thursday’s return at Estadio Bellavista in Ambato.
Before that, Cuca’s side sit 17th in the Brasileiro on 22 points and visit Vasco at São Januário on Sunday at 16:00 Brasília time in the 23rd round.
