Gabriel Delfim, 24, starred for Atlético-MG, saving three penalties to knock Santos out and send his side into the Copa Sudamericana semi-finals. According to Diario Do Peixe, the goalkeeper spent time in Santos’s youth before spells at Portuguesa Santista and Santo André.

Santos won the first leg 2-0 at Vila Belmiro. Atlético-MG replied 4-2 at Arena MRV on Wednesday, taking the tie to penalties, where a 3-1 shootout sealed progression. Arthur, João Schmidt and Gabriel Barbosa failed to convert for Santos.

He spent around two years in Santos’s futsal, also featuring briefly on the pitch, then left after being told he would not be used if he switched fully to 11-a-side.

Born in Simonésia and raised in Cubatão, he started at Aymoré futsal aged five. He also took part in the Pagão project in partnership with Jabaquara, which channelled standout players to official teams.

He later played for Portuguesa Santista and Santo André, returned to Portuguesa Santista in 2016, then joined Atlético-MG, where he remains. Delfim trained with Santos’s 2001 group that included Rodrygo, Yuri Alberto, Victor Yan and Lucas Lourenço.

Santos are now out of all knockout competitions this season and will focus on the Campeonato Brasileiro. Their next match is at Remo on Saturday 19 at 18:30 Brasília time in Belém, the 28th round.
