Former Manchester United and Real Madrid defender Gabriel Heinze has officially joined Mikel Arteta’s backroom team at Arsenal.
The Gunners confirmed the Argentine’s arrival following the departure of Carlos Cuesta, who left the club last month to take up the head coach role at Serie A side Parma.
The Argentine links up with Arteta as the pair were teammates at Paris Saint-Germain in their early careers and have stayed in touch ever since.
The 47-year-old now links up with the existing coaching team at Arsenal, which includes assistant Albert Stuivenberg, set-piece specialist Nico Jover, and goalkeeping coach Inaki Cana - all of whom have been part of Arteta’s staff since 2021.
Although Heinze brings prior managerial experience, including spells at Vélez Sarsfield and Newell’s Old Boys, he’s been out of work since leaving the latter in November 2023.
He was first linked with a move to north London around this time last year, with reports in Argentina suggesting he was ready to join the club as Cuesta began to attract interest for managerial roles elsewhere.
