Galatasaray have stepped up their midfield hunt this winter, with Manchester United’s Manuel Ugarte emerging as the leading target to meet Okan Buruk’s need for bite and quick transitions. The 24-year-old joined from Paris Saint-Germain for about €50 million last summer and has endured a difficult start at Old Trafford.
Fotomac reports that the Istanbul club are assembling a proposal built around an initial loan with a purchase option. United are said to be seeking more than €30 million, while Galatasaray’s package is believed to total about €25 million.
Ugarte has featured in only 12 competitive matches without a goal contribution and has struggled to nail down a role under Ruben Amorim. With Lyon and Napoli also circling, Galatasaray know they must move quickly to avoid a bidding war.
The club are leaning on their Uruguay spine to sway the midfielder. Fernando Muslera and Lucas Torreira have reportedly contacted their international team-mate to outline the atmosphere at RAMS Park and the prospect of regular minutes in a title-chasing side.
Buruk wants a shield in front of the defence who can also trigger counters, and despite Premier League struggles Ugarte’s ball-winning is viewed as a strong fit alongside Torreira in a double pivot. The question now is whether United will accept a reduced return or whether Galatasaray’s charm offensive can bring the Uruguayan to the Bosphorus as the window nears.
