Game over as £30m Liverpool midfielder edges closer to move away

Liverpool’s midfield is set for big changes before the summer transfer window closes.

We could see fringe players like Stefan Bajcetic and Harvey Elliott moved on. Bajcetic - under contract until 2027 - is wanted in La Liga with Getafe the latest club linked.

In a similar situation is Elliott - whose deal also expires next year. It doesn’t appear the 23-year-old has done enough ton convince Andoni Iraola in preseason. Don’t be surprised if a bid materialised before the window slams shut.

The most pressing business Liverpool need to attend to however concerns Curtis Jones.

New Inter Milan bid coming for Curtis Jones

The 25-year-old has also got a contract which expires in 2027 and there is no chance of him signing a new deal.

Jones hasn’t been spotted since an ill-fated 45 minutes in preseason against Leeds United - with the official reason for his absence being a hip injury.

But he could well have played his final game for his boyhood club - with a move to Inter Milan now shaping up to be an inevitability.

Curtis Jones is Cristian Chivu's ultimate transfer wish

The Italian champions have chased the England international since January and there finally seems to be a finish line in sight.

Liverpool have stuck to their valuation of £35m for Jones - which Inter have got no intention of meeting. Instead the Nerazzurri are hoping to make Richard Hughes sweat - and agree to a cut-price deal before the window closes.

Gazzetta dello Sport is now reporting that this tactic is close to paying off. Because Inter will submit a bid closer to the £30m mark this week - giving head coach Cristian Chivu his ultimate transfer wish.

£30m Jones bid could be enough

“Chivu is waiting for his ultimate transfer wish to be granted: the coach has been reassured that a bid for Curtis Jones will soon arrive, in the form of a new, decisive offer,” the report reads.

“His contract, which expires next June, allows him to sign for free on January 1st, and this prospect offers the Nerazzurri the opportunity to try to bring his counterpart down to under €40 million,” the report reads.

“The general feeling is that a move from €30 million to €35 million might be enough.”

Liverpool could be waving goodbye to the last Scouser in their team by the end of this week - leaving a sizeable hole in the midfield. Jones was unable to consistently win over Arne Slot as a starter during the Dutchman’s time in charge.
