Gary Neville has clarified why he initially named Daniel Farke as his Premier League manager of the season, saying he had meant to recognise the Leeds United boss as his most improved.
Farke has delivered a hugely impressive campaign, securing safety with three games to spare. Leeds have since taken four points from two outings and can reach 50 points by beating West Ham on Sunday.
They could still finish as high as 10th, with 15th the lowest possible, and are unbeaten in eight. Leeds have lost only four of their last 24 league matches, a run dating back to early December.
Despite that, Farke was left off the Premier League’s six-man Manager of the Season shortlist, which includes Mikel Arteta, Pep Guardiola, Keith Andrews, Andoni Iraola, Michael Carrick and Regis Le Bris.
“I think I’ve probably misunderstood the question as it’s been sent to me! I thought it was most improved, and I put player Matheus Nunes and Farke as manager. So I’ve put the most improved manager as Farke because, basically, he was done and he’d been relegated a couple of times before so for him to keep Leeds up,” he said on Sky Sports.
He added: “I remember going back to Leeds for those games in the middle of the winter and they were on the brink of sacking him. That’s why I’ve got mixed up, I went for most improved manager and player as Farke and Nunes. Manager of the year I think is Arteta.”
