Gary Neville has offered a glowing verdict on Sunderland goalkeeper Matty Young, backing the teenager to enjoy a big future amid growing England speculation.

According to Sunderland Echo, the 19-year-old has already made 45 appearances for Salford City in all competitions this season, surpassing the 27 from his breakthrough campaign.

Young joined Sunderland at the age of seven and signed his first professional contract in November 2023. A loan at Darlington brought the club’s Young Player of the Season award, with subsequent spells at Salford arranged to secure consistent senior minutes.

Internationally, he has progressed through England’s U18s, U19s and U20s, and has since been called up by the U21s. His rise has prompted suggestions he could one day push for the senior squad.

Neville said: “He’s done really well. Obviously, he is on loan with us until the end of the season. I hope we can get into League One so he can come with us, and he is very composed for a young goalkeeper. He has a big future.”
