Gary O'Neil has left Strasbourg to take charge of Ipswich Town, newly promoted to the Premier League, with the French club now seeking a new head coach.

According to L'Équipe, Ipswich have agreed a package worth around €5m including bonuses to release the 43-year-old, who had two years left on his deal. He has signed until 2029.

O'Neil arrived in Alsace in January to replace Liam Rosenior. Strasbourg thanked O'Neil along with Tim Jenkins, Neil Critchley and Ed Ames for their work in recent months.

At his unveiling on Tuesday, O'Neil said he enjoyed his spell abroad, even if it was shorter than planned. He described working with BlueCo as straightforward, said they are fully committed to Chelsea and Strasbourg, and that he left on good terms.

He felt the experience made him better and could inspire other English managers. The Premier League matches his personal ambition, he added, noting he did not feel done with it during spells at Bournemouth or Wolverhampton, and that coaching in the division is the pinnacle he could not refuse.

Strasbourg are now targeting a swift appointment, with a successor should be in place before training resumes on 8 July.
