Leicester City’s final-day win over Blackburn left them with enough points to survive without their six-point Profit and Sustainability Rules deduction, yet Gary Rowett says the squad will not blame the club for relegation.
According to LeicesterMercury.co.uk, City would have placed 21st on 52 points, ahead of Sheffield Wednesday, Oxford and Blackburn, the latter on goal difference. West Brom finished on 51 points but without their deduction would have ended on 53.
Rowett said he has not heard players pin the drop on the sanction and that they accepted it. He felt the team should have had more about them to stay up by a greater margin, pointing to missed opportunities, the extra drive and the physicality needed in the Championship.
He added that such themes may form part of the narrative, but he has not heard players lean on them. He maintained the squad know they have not been good enough and will not shirk responsibility.
Many will not face the repercussions of League One, with departures expected. Rowett referenced Ricky, calling it his last game and a fitting tribute amid a poor season. He said a positive finish mattered after enough negatives.
He framed the summer as a chance for the club to rebuild, reassess what matters and get the cultural pieces right.
