FLW's Luton Town Fan Pundit doesn't "care" about what the Hatters CEO says
This article is part of Football League World's 'Terrace Talk' series, which provides personal opinions from our FLW Fan Pundits regarding the latest breaking news, teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…
Luton Town chief executive Gary Sweet has claimed the club would have "no qualms" about sacking manager Matt Bloomfield if results do not improve, but there is belief the focus should be on the boardroom rather than the dugout.
Sweet's comments come after Saturday's dismal 3-1 defeat at Lincoln City that saw travelling supporters chant "you're getting sacked in the morning" at Bloomfield.
It marked Luton's fourth loss in eight League One matches following their back-to-back relegations from the Premier League to League One.
Speaking to BBC Three Counties Radio, Sweet provided what many would consider a dreaded vote of confidence for Bloomfield while simultaneously issuing a stark ultimatum about the manager's position.
"If Matt wasn't capable, we would have absolutely no qualms in making that tough decision," Sweet stated.
"Matt is incredibly capable, he's incredibly resilient, he's incredibly determined. He has become so enthused by this football club - there is an energy you can only really see if you go to the training ground, he does create a fantastic environment."
"We need to turn that environment into performances," Sweet added.
The 41-year-old manager has called for "hunger and heart" from his rebuilt squad as they attempt to climb back up the leagues.
Despite maintaining one of the division's best defensive records early in the season, recent performances have seen Luton concede three goals in each of their last two outings while struggling to create chances from open play.
However, FLW's Luton Town Fan Pundit, Simon Mills, has delivered a rather scathing assessment of Sweet's leadership and questioned whether the CEO should be pointing fingers at the manager when broader issues plague the club.
"Right now, I don’t particularly care what Gary Sweet has to say about things," Mills declared.
"You’re going to get the man off of TV, or out of interviews when we were in the Premier League. Yeah, he deserved the plaudits at the time by getting us up into that position to begin with, and 2020 had done a great job. And then, the Premier League came and the wheels fell off."
Mills expressed particular frustration with what he perceives as misplaced priorities at Kenilworth Road, suggesting the club's focus has shifted away from football success.
"It sort of feels like right now we are a property management group with a football club, due to the tunnel vision focus of getting Power Court done at all costs."
The Fan Pundit acknowledged supporting the new stadium project but believes it has come at the expense of on-field performance. "I fully am on board with getting Power Court done, but it has come some way at the expense of the football on the pitch, and eyes being taken off the ball."
"It’s really easy to say they would sack Matt Bloomfield if they needed to, but this is a management group who have got their management hirings wrong more than they’ve got them right," Mills continued.
The criticism likely extends to the club's handling of Rob Edwards' dismissal in January, with Mills previously stating to FLW that Edwards "should have gone in November when we lost to Middlesbrough" rather than being allowed to continue until the damage was done.
Mills also raised questions about the club's communication with supporters. "In regards to Gary Sweet again, we were promised a full transparent review, and we’ve heard nothing further about that other than this interview.
The coming weeks will perhaps prove decisive in determining whether Sweet's faith in Bloomfield is justified, or whether Mills' calls for broader accountability at the top gain further traction among the Hatters faithful.
