Gian Piero Gasperini will not be on the bench for next Sunday’s big league match between Roma and Napoli at the Stadio Olimpico.
However, there is good news for the Giallorossi: the Sports Judge has officially handed him a one-match suspension following the coach’s dismissal during the 3-1 victory over Cremonese.
Protests, particularly with the fourth official, led to the disciplinary action. The decisive incident occurred in the second half, when referee Ayroldi first showed a yellow card and then—with Gasperini insisting he hadn’t said anything—opted for a straight red.
The dismissal, which came for “much less serious” protests than those seen in the first half, was harshly contested by the coach post-match to DAZN: “Compared to the many situations in the first half, I didn’t say anything in the second. The referee and the fourth official made two serious errors. If they should have done something, it would have been in the first half. Not the second.”
The suspension, a direct one and not a combination of yellow cards, will mean Gasperini will miss the match against Antonio Conte’s team, in a crucial match for the top of the table.
His assistant, Tullio Gritti, will lead the team from the bench.
As clarified by former referee Luca Marelli, the yellow card shown before the red card will not be cancelled but will be “added to other yellows already received or that he may receive,” and will remain the responsibility of the coach.
