Reports say Gennaro Gattuso is already at work at Lazio, trying to persuade Gila and Alessio Romagnoli to stay for 2026-27, even though his official start date is still weeks away.

La Gazzetta dello Sport reports that, despite no formal appointment yet, he has begun building relationships with the squad and has been phoning players, with early feedback said to be positive.

In recent days it has been reported that the former Italy coach has an agreement to replace Maurizio Sarri on an initial two-year contract.

The squad are currently on holiday or preparing for international duty after the close of the 2025-26 Serie A season, and are due to return for pre-season on 13 July.

He already knows Mattia Zaccagni and Nicolo Rovella from Italy camps, and is said to view Kenneth Taylor as central to the project.

The report also indicated that Gila and Romagnoli had been among the likeliest departures this summer, but after talks with the incoming coach they are no longer as convinced. Gattuso has also held conversations with Danilo Cataldi, Adam Marusic and Patric, regarded as part of Lazio’s leadership group.
